Hardware Needed For
Your New York or New Jersey MyHome Renovation
Hardware as a Designing Term
The term “hardware” might be a misleading
because it often refers to general hardware, such
as tools and other merchandise that laypeople might
imagine would be hanging on the shelf in their local
New York City hardware store.
In this section, however, the hardware to which we’re
referring consists of two types of products:
1. Handles for cabinetry,
such as knobs or pulls; and
2. Lock sets for interior/exterior
doors.
Pulls, Knobs, & Levers
Are The Detail In Your Design
Like the garnish on your plate at a five star restaurant
or the cherry on your NY cheesecake, the hardware
that adorns your renovation project can provide just
the right contour and texture to turn your space from
adequate to sublime. However, since these are small,
relatively inexpensive items, hardware accessories
often become a low priority, getting shuttled to the
end of your project.
Knobs and Pulls Give The Final
Touch and Sparkle
True, knobs and pulls may not require as careful planning
as room layout and cabinetry work does, but it’s
important not to underestimate the significant impact
it can have on your room’s overall appearance.
Whether you’re renovating a kitchen or building
exquisite new cabinets to house your entertainment
system, the right hardware accessories can often give
your project that extra sparkle that transforms your
space into a true sanctuary, providing years of added
enjoyment for you and your entire family.

As always, your MyHome Remodeling Consultant will
assist you with your selection, making sure your hardware
is properly incorporated into the design. At MyHome
you will find a great selection of all types of cabinet
handles, including modern stainless steel or aluminum
finishes and more traditional finishes such as copper,
gold, and oil- robbed bronze. Most of our clients
find exactly what they’re looking for in our
showroom, but we can always special-order for you
if nothing catches your eye.
Lockset Choices To Secure Your Home
Before you’ve decided on the style, it’s
also important to make a decision on the lockset that
fits your needs. With today’s technology at
your disposal there are many options that vary in
terms of security, sophistication and design.
Some important questions to ask might be: Where will
the lock be placed? What level of security is necessary?
While you might want a traditional non-locking cylindrical
passage set for your hallways and entertainment rooms,
you might consider a cylindrical privacy lockset,
which locks from the inside, for your bathroom or
master bedroom. Additionally, you might consider a
mortise entrance lockset with a deadbolt for the entrance
to your home.
Because the gamut is so large in style and technology,
selecting the right lockset can be highly difficult
for laypeople and usually requires a professional
consultation. Please ask our Remodeling Consultants
at our showroom to show you the many styles and types
available.
Our MyHome Remodeling Consultants are completely familiar
with all of the devices and are at your disposal to
discuss which lockset options would be right for you.
Whether you’re worried about fire hazards in
your New York City Apartment or you’re looking
to improve the security on your entire office, MyHome
is well schooled in matching your needs with the entire
spectrum of available products.

Mortise Versus Cylindrical
Locksets
There are two basic designs for locksets: the cylindrical
and mortise. At first glance, these two basic designs
might seem similar in function but nothing can be
further from the truth.
A mortise lockset fits deeply in a narrow slot inserted
at the edge of the door, while cylindrical locksets
are the ones with which most consumers are familiar.
Anyone who’s ever seen those pre-drilled holes
in a door might be familiar with this type. Basically
cylindrical locksets offer easy installation and affordability,
while mortise locksets provide added security and
longevity, sometimes lasting the entire life of your
home or Manhattan apartment.
For the most part, the kind of set you use will depend
on whether you’re working with an interior or
exterior door. For example residences usually only
need a mortise set on the front door for display as
well as added security to keep out potential intruders.
Exterior doors can take both cylindrical or mortise
locksets, while interior doors usually have a cylindrical
lockset operated with a push button. However, some
older, pre-war New Jersey and Westchester homes may
have interior mortise locksets.
Cylindrical Locksets
Exterior cylindrical locksets can be operated with
a key in the exterior knob, while the interior knob
can be manipulated with a push button or turn grommet.
The two most common sizes for residences are sizes
are 2 3/8 inch and 2 3/4 inch.
Like their name, both the knob and the locking mechanism
inside are round. Easy to install with simple drilling,
our MyHome contractors can take care of this for you
very quickly.
Offering a wide selection of durability and selection,
these locksets are divided into three categories:
residential, light commercial, and heavy duty. They
rarely ever use a deadbolt lock.

Whether you just want to purchase the product and
install it yourself, or you want one of our contractors
to perform the installation for you the expertise

Mortise Locksets
Mortise locksets are often found in solid brass and
are more complex in that they incorporate a deadbolt
and sometimes a latch into the design of the entire
locking mechanism. For maximum security, be sure your
exterior doors contain deadbolts with at least a 1-inch
"throw.” Often constructed with a latch
and deadbolt system, these designs also allow for
fire safety and are easy to unlock from the inside
if you request it.
Mortise sets are by far more lavish and thus expensive.
They come in a variety of styles including the knobs,
pulls, and levers we mentioned beforehand. Usually
one key opens both the latch and the deadbolt, but
there are designs that allow you to turn the key in
different directions to open the lock—for more
intense security measures.
Installation requires a high level of expertise in
both lock design and carpentry work that MyHome’s
well-trained professionals will be more than happy
to provide. Most professionals advise that laypeople
not take on self-installation with mortise locksets
because of the level of skill involved in this process,
so please allow our team to assist you on every aspect
of your project. A lock that doesn’t work could
compromise both your privacy and safety, and MyHome
wants to ensure that both of these crucial elements
are integrated into your remodeling project. elements
